Past and present

Today was a trip back over the mountains to Rethymno the bird largest city on the island. And you guessed it, there is a Venetian fort here! Unfortunately it was not open for touring so that meant my next stop was the Paleontological museum.
As I was trying to follow my gps(walking), I happened upon a stationery store where I was able to find a bubble envelope to mail some wild rice to my e-bike tour guide. He and his a family sounded like foodies, and I brought some wild rice to give away. I also bought some pretty, Greek Christmas cards.
From there, I continued through this town that is a combination of Venice—twisting streets— and Florence—wooden balconies. My gps said I arrived, but I was at a mosque. Then I realized, the museum was IN the mosque.

I was particularly interested in the museum because they have evidence (bones) that Pygmy hippos used to live on the island as well as deer and elephants. The hippos must have been just as cute as you would imagine. Unfortunately, no photos allowed. So you just get the exterior of the mosque.

After that, I decided some shopping was indicated. I got some cat pillow covers at a line store, some Christmas ornaments made by Greek artists at a boutique, and some jewelry and an orange vegan purse at another shop full of Greek made items. The lady there was so nice. She agreed with me that purple and orange go together—a combination that would apall my mother.

I asked her if she liked dogs because there was a black pug statue outside the store wearing a Santa hat. That’s actually what made me go on the store. And we shared dog photos! She was so sweet.

After a walk around the port checking out where the sailboats were from—Finland, Seattle, Greece…I stopped for a snack and a Greek coffee before heading back to my home until 12/21.
