Fall road-trip

Updated: May 23

All summer I've been talking about going to look at a camper trailer in Ontario, so it was time to get the show on the road! Yesterday Buddha and I left home after work and booked it to Hurley, Wi which is just on Michigan border.

We had a nice stay at Mabie Meadows air BnB which was the best deal in town for a short overnight. I had a nice visit with the owners and some folks staying there. One gentleman was a retired professional pastry chef, so I picked his brain for baking tips. Bagels need high gluten flour. A good baguette has a bit of sour dough. We agreed lard is the BEST for pie crusts. He had a lot of admiration for an Amish bakery in Dalton, WI. Duly noted for my return route!

I don't think Buddha wanted to leave. She was getting so much attention, but on the road we needed to be to get checked in at Brimley State Park, which is not far from Sault Ste Marie MI and Canada. Despite the rainy conditions, it was a beautiful ride full of fall colors. It was interesting the variations of stages as there must be microclimates along this route with the Porcupine Mountains and the capricious Lake Superior.

I finally go ahead of the rain just before Brimley. I was able to get checked in quickly and I raced against time to get my tent up before it rained. The forecast was showing some light showers and then clearing. I wanted to get set up on dry ground, which was accomplished. Thankfully, the rain didn't amount to much. Buddha was quite interested in the chipmunks. I told them they better get out of sight!

We got settled and check out the camp host and had a walk on our beach front. I was gonna do this on my laptop, but I forgot my bag on cables and it's out of juice. So until I get to civilization to buy a power cord, no laptop.

That is fine because I have "Of Time and Turtles"' and Devienne Lions to read, my journal, yoga study to do and a book on Michigan rocks to understand the geology of what I drove past today. As I write that, I'm like that is a vacation?

As usual, I'll blame my dad the ex-Marine who was always disciplined and always doing something productive with his time. Although dad passed away on 2014, he comes with me on my road trips. When he died, Mom had some of his favorite shirts made into adorable teddy bears. I always bring one along. Dad loved a good road trip and I like to think he's looking down and enjoying my explorations.
