Biloxi Blues

Updated: Aug 14, 2023

My first full day in Biloxi was spent mostly at my desk at the wonderful air BnB hosted by Deanna. In addition to work being busier during this time period than I had anticipated, I'm also taking an online marketing course through NorthWestern University, which was particularly intense this week as well. So, I finally escaped my room late afternoon, and I was going to ride my bike along the beach.

However, I was going to walk Buddha first, but she was enjoying herself so much and was so perky, we just kept walking. She is getting older and her hind legs are a bit arthritic, so when she's feeling goog; I go with the flow. Maybe the powdery sand felt really good on her feet. Or maybe it reminded her of snow. She loves to roll in the snow.

There are herons everywhere here and lots of broken up oyster shells on the beach. I kept seeing these risings in the sand and I thought maybe sand had washed over seaweed or something like that. But I finally concluded they must be tracks made by some creature. If anyone knows, let me know!

After the lovely sunset, I wasn't ready to return to my room, so I went to a bar named Cora's in the White House hotel which looks like the place to stay if you have big bucks. I was pleased to find a Paper Plane on the menu -- its a bourbon drink I like that not many bars made because it requires Amaro and Aperol. Most bars have Aperol on hand, but Amaro, not so much. I also ordered fried green tomatoes because i'm on the search

for the best, and sweet potato grits. The bar tender accidentally put in for garlic green

beans, so I had those too. The fried green tomatoes were good, but more modern American with. balsamic vinegrette and a soft cheese topping. The grits did not have a lot of flavor despite the sweet potatoes, which is usually my complaint about grits. :).

It's funny too, how once they know i'm a northerner and I order something spicy, they feel like they have to warn me. I said, I know ketchup is a spice in Minnesota, but I'm not originally from Minnesota, and my ex-husband introduced me to Korean food, which isn't exactly bland. I have not had anything that I thought was super spicy.

I believe the friend green tomatoes i had the night before at Half oyster shell are the best i've had so far and their Redfish Orleans was to die for.

There was, finally, some live music. The first guy who did a couple of songs was good, but an older man who came on next was clearly an experienced singer. He had a range and lots of blues ethos. What I had been hoping to find in the south. The next singer also played his guitar, but, which good, did not have the depth of the previous act.

Then it was back to my room to prepare for any early morning start for kayaking before work.
